Frank’s information was correct. We could hear the piano music as we neared the Bucking Horse Saloon. We stepped in through the batwing doors and instantly realized that the saloon was a totally different place at night than during the day. The place was almost as hopping as any nightclub back home. The piano music was lively, and every table was filled with people chattering, drinking, and playing cards.

“No cards for you, Atticus,” warned Zell, wagging a finger at him.

Atticus rolled his eyes and shook his head at her.

“Ah! There’s my friend Blossom,” said Frank from his position in Atticus’s arms. “Back corner, left. Onward, my man!”

Atticus carried Frank over to the table where a woman, two men, and a lovely orange tabby cat sat.

“Ah! My new feline friend, Frank. Hello there!” purred the cat in a delicate feminine voice.

We gawked at the cat in surprise. Even though we’d been conversing with Frank all this time, the fact that this other cat was speaking took us all by surprise. It should have been expected, though, as everyone in town spoke with Frank as if it were the most common thing in the world. We had yet to meet another talking animal, though, so this was a first.

“I’d like you to meet my owners,” she said in her delicate voice. “This is Isom, who owns the town mercantile, and his brother Abe who helps out at the store. And this here’s Louisa, Isom’s wife. She runs the apparel store in town.”

We shook ourselves out of our stupor and greeted them. Several of us had briefly met Louisa in her shop, when Zell had been trying on a dress and pretended to be Lulabelle, so we reconnected and complimented her on her store.

“My friends here are interested in the story you told about Quinten Littlefield and the missing saloon girl,” said Frank. “What was her name … Mary?” he said, attempting to appear confused.

“No, it was Mollie!” said Louisa, jumping at the chance to share what she had heard. “I was talking to the ladies at Jeremy Barrett’s celebration. They told me that this girl Mollie and the saloon owner had been meeting in secret for quite some time. That Mollie wasn’t a talker though, so she’d never say anything about their affair. He’s quite a few years older. Why, I suspect she’s the age of his daughter! Quite titillating, don’t you think?”

“Oh, my!” said Sebastian. “What do you think she saw in him?”

“Obviously his money!” said Louisa. “Owning the saloon and all.”

“Now, honey,” said Isom in a deep, steady voice. “Spreading gossip is not Christian-like.”

“Ooops! I’m so sorry, dear. Well, that’s all I heard.”

The piano music came to a pause, and I glanced at the man getting up from the bench. I nudged GeeGee.

“Thanks for the visit, folks,” said GeeGee, waving them goodbye and leading our group over to the piano player.
